Korean Radish Namul: A Simple & Sweet Korean Side Dish 2026-09-29

Korean radish is at its best in the fall.

Raw Korean radish is crisp and refreshing, but something special happens when it’s cooked. It becomes tender and develops a mild, natural sweetness.

Koreans use seasonal radish in many different dishes, and one of the simplest is Mu Namul, or Korean Radish Namul.

It requires only a few ingredients and lets the natural flavor of Korean radish shine.

How to Make Korean Radish Namul

Korean Radish Namul is a simple vegetable side dish, or banchan, made by gently cooking julienned Korean radish.

The key is to keep the seasoning simple and let the radish do the work.

  1. Slice the Korean Radish

Cut Korean radish into thin, even strips.

Keeping the pieces similar in size helps them cook evenly while maintaining a pleasantly tender texture.

  1. Gently Sauté

Add sesame oil or perilla oil to a pan and gently sauté the sliced radish.

Season lightly with salt or Korean soup soy sauce. Cook until the radish becomes tender and slightly translucent.

Try not to overcook it. A little texture makes Mu Namul even better!

  1. Finish with Sesame Seeds

Sprinkle sesame seeds over the cooked radish and it’s ready to serve.

Simple, naturally sweet, and comforting.

That’s Korean Radish Namul.

From Banchan to Bibimbap

Mu Namul is delicious on its own with a bowl of warm rice, but it can easily become part of another meal.

In Korea, leftover namul from holidays such as Chuseok is often enjoyed with rice, gochujang, and sesame oil.

Mix everything together and you have Bibimbap, one of Korea’s best-known K-Foods.

One simple Korean radish dish can become a side dish today and part of tomorrow’s Bibimbap.

It’s a small but delicious example of how Korean cooking makes the most of seasonal ingredients.
